Step out of Stockholm Central Station, look across Vasagatan, and there it stands: a great red mass of sandstone and brick with a tower above the door. This is the old Central Post Office, Ferdinand Boberg’s masterpiece of 1903 and for a century the heart of the Swedish postal service.

A landmark without its original use

Posten moved its headquarters out in 2003, and the following year the National Property Board of Sweden took over. A careful renovation from 2005 to 2008 prepared the building for the Government Offices. Its homing pigeons, pine twigs and small animals in stone still surround the entrance, and they remain among the details that make the building so easy to love.

A new life as a meeting place

Since around 2020, the meeting and office company 7A has run 16,000 square metres of the building as 7A Posthuset. Boberghallen, the old post hall, is now a lounge and event space beneath its painted vaults, and the building has more than 30 conference rooms and two party venues.

The old Central Post Office shows how a public building can stay relevant when its original function has gone. Its location beside the station and its history are still the assets, but they now serve a new purpose.
